Major-General Walker arrives | 656 Sqdn Beaver XP820 | RAF Changi August 1962
Army Air Corps Beaver XP820 just after arrival at Changi carrying Major-General Walter Walker, General Officer Commanding 17th Gurkha Division and Major General, Brigade of Gurkhas. He took over the British Army involved in the Brunei Revolt in the following December and subsequently the 'Indonesian Confrontation' campaign, which he was in charge of until March 1965 and was responsible for the planning of the successful campaign, which so easily could have become Britain's 'Vietnam'. Denis Healey, who became Secretary of State for Defence in 1964, considered that the Borneo campaign would be recorded as "one of the most efficient uses of military force in the history of the world".
Beaver XP820 is still flying with the Army Historical Flight at Middle Wallop and often still gets taken to do 'circuits and bumps', which I've sometimes watched on Friday's in the summer. Alas it's appearance at the odd airshow seems to have now stopped.
