Converting to the new Comet | Comet C4 XR399 | RAF Changi 31st July
Comet C4 XR399 arrives from Gan on a training flight piloted by Flt. Lt. T. Clarke with a number of other 216 Sqdn's aircrew who were being given conversion training on the new Comet version. Lyneham installed a Comet 4 simulator during the month of August, and stated in the squadron's records "The simulator is capable of producing all phases of a flight except the actual visual landing. It is hoped eventually to install a closed circuit projection system so that even this deficiency will be remedied. Training is due to start in September, when each crew will be required to complete a four hour detail each."
XR399 headed to Kai Tak before returning home at Lyneham on the 6th August but it left again on the 12th for another training run to Changi and Kai Tak.
In the background are a pair of Aussie Canberras from Amberley and a 52 Sqdn Valetta, which has just started up for return to Butterworth.
