Arriving on three | Britannia XM490 | RAF Changi January 1962
Arriving at 13.45 on 2nd January 1962, Britannia XM490 has the starboard inner engine feathered as she taxies in from Changi's runway 02. Many aircraft taxied on two engines; Britannia's usually doing it with the outers feathered. XM490 however arrived with this starboard inner off and Britannia's did suffer with their Proteus engines icing at altitude. After a flight left Lyneham on the 22nd December, the Britannia's base was closed by the very bad snow that covered the UK over Christmas 1962 and the first aircraft away again had been XL660 on the 27th December.
This aircraft XM490 returned from Changi on the 6th, captained by 99 Sqdn's Flt. Lt. P.M. Hill. His crew didn't 'slip' going home and routed via Gan, Khormaksar and El Adem before 'dropping off' at the V-Bomber base at Scampton on the 8th and then returning to Lyneham.
