Doing the rounds | Beverley XM104 | RAF Changi November 1963
XM104, one of the Beverleys from 34 Sqdn at Seletar comes into Changi at 1450 on 25th November 1963. Note the crew member seated 'on top' with another head out of the hatch. The aircraft left with an 'MSP' (Medium Stressed Platform) which the crew under Flt.Lt. Davies took up to Kuantan in Malaya and then returned to Seletar. This was the second outing for Beverley XM104 as earlier in the day it had flown to Kuantan from Seletar with a pair of 'MSPs', giving the pilot Flt.Lt. Tucker a 'Cat IV check' en route.
During the Indonesian Confrontation, the Beverleys, always good getting into and out of small runways, weren’t that good at manoeuvring in some of the difficult valleys and even the Argosys needed to use the water-methanol boosting to get enough power to clear the jungle hill sides after some of the more difficult drops. However the Beverleys of 34 Sqdn only suffered one loss, when on 15th December 1967, when XL150 crashed into a ridge at Bukit Hantu, in Central Malaya, in bad weather during a low level cross-country flight with the loss of all six onboard.
