Armament display | RAAF Sabre A94-988 | RAF Changi September 1962
Sabre A94-988 from 78 Wing at Butterworth getting set up with a full weapons load for the static display at the Battle-of-Britain Airshow at Changi in September 1962. It’s already carrying Sidewinders and the rails are being mounted for rocket projectiles on each side, a pretty heavy load for such a small fellow. A white 1000lb bomb also awaits being displayed and both the Brits and the Aussie’s were still using ex-WW2 stock...perhaps that’s why it looks so ‘worn’.
Once they were retired from the RAAF, 18 Sabres were donated to the Royal Malaysian Air Force between 1969 and 1972, operating as No 11 Sqdn and strangely, considering we used them to defend Singapore and Malaysia during the Indonesian Confrontation, 23 ex-RAAF Sabres also eventually went to Indonesia between 1973 and ‘75, five of these being ex Malaysian AF. This aircraft ‘988 was one of the donated aircraft, becoming F-8615. It survives and is currently marked as TS-8615 and displayed at the Indonesian Air Force TNI-AU Academy.
